Sam Greenwood has taken to social media with his Middlesbrough loan coming to an end, he looks set to return to Leeds United this summer.

The loan players this season have been a huge topic of conversation at Elland Road, with most of them burning the decks using loan clauses to get out after relegation.

Some loans were of a more orthodox nature, however, including Sam Greenwood, who joined Championship rivals Middlesbrough this season.

With the end of the regular season on Saturday, Greenwood’s time on Teesside under Michael Carrick also comes to an end.

He took to Instagram to share this message with the club and fan base:

Greenwood ended his spell at Boro with five goals and three assists to his name from 37 Championship appearances.

Boro are unlikely to take up the £1.5m purchase option

The Athletic reported that Middlesbrough had a £1.5m purchase option in Greenwood’s loan deal ahead of this summer.

While there have been no concrete reports on whether the Teessiders will make an upset, their star midfielder Hayden Hackney appears to have strongly hinted at Greenwood not joining the Riverside permanently.

He commented on Greenwood’s post:

Greenwood another in transfer limbo

It appears that Greenwood will not be joining Boro for good, raising the question of what his future holds.

For Leeds, it was pretty obvious that he was surplus to requirements, to the point where I let him go in one of the top six contenders for the season.

If he’s not in the plans, you’d hope someone would be willing to pay us that fee to sign him anyway.
