Everton secure fifth successive EPL win at home by beating relegated Sheffield United

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Everton ended their season at Goodison Park with a comfortable 1-0 win over already-relegated Sheffield United in the English Premier League on Saturday.

With safety already secured and nothing to play for but a record-equalling fifth consecutive home win without conceding, there was no heart-wrenching finale to his final home game of the campaign, unlike of recent times.

Abdoulaye Doucoure’s first goal in five months ensured the fans, for the first time in a long time, enjoyed the departure in front of the players, with all anxiety reserved for off-field matters amid the uncertainty surrounding sale of the club.

Twelve of the matchday squad will either be out of contract in the next month or enter the final year, with Leeds winger Jack Harrison – who played his last game for the club after being injured – on loan and Dele Alli, who did not featured since August 2022 is also getting ready to go.

Two others – Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana – are already linked with other clubs and the long-standing takeover of the club by 777 Partners appears to be on the brink of collapse.

At least the season ends on a positive note on the pitch under manager Sean Dyche. Since the start of April, only Arsenal and Manchester City have more points than Everton’s 17. While this was typical end-of-season fare, it didn’t faze fans who had to endure relegation escapes in their last home game in the last two. campaigns.

The win took Everton to 40 points. Without eight points deducted for financial infringements, the team would have pushed for a top-half place.

Sheffield United were already assured of finishing bottom and agreed record 101st goal of the campaign.
