Everton 1-0 Sheffield United: Toffees still sweet at Goodison Park

Everton extended their Premier League unbeaten run to five games with a 1-0 win over crushing and relegated Sheffield United at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Aboulaye Doucoure converted Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the game’s only goal as the Toffees kept another clean sheet to move to 15th on the season with 40 points.

Sheffield United have had no such luck and rarely a glimmer of hope this season. Chris Wilder’s men have not won since February 10 at Luton Town, picking up just three points from 13 games to confirm their position in 20th place. Wes Foderingham made six saves in a lucky loss.

The Blades conceded 101 goals and scored just 35, worst in both categories. Their 16 points are eight points off 19th place and 13 adrift of safety as the sacking of Paul Heckingbottom to re-employ Wilder saw little improvement.

Goodison Park remains a difference maker for Everton

The Toffees have been superb at home since the start of April, beating Burnley, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, Brentford and now Sheffield United to move clear of the top three despite multiple points deductions this season.

And the Goodison Park faithful were also so important last season when Sean Dyche engineered a very different safety push.

Everton are a proud and historic club and their fans continue to find their voices and get behind their club regardless of the problems behind them. Like Newcastle and Aston Villa before them, they deserve better. Along with Dyche, they will have a chance and have played no small part in making sure the chance is at the top.

What’s next?

Everton travel to Arsenal on Sunday, while Sheffield United host Tottenham.

As it seems

Not much cooking in the second half as a total of 0.60 xG arrived in the first 40 minutes of the frame.

The Blades got more shots and danger, but not in a way that offered the foreboding of a goal.

Half time – Everton 1-0 Sheffield United

The Toffees should probably have at least one more goal.

Sheffield United’s xG hemorrhaging season continues, falling 1.73-0.07 in that department and taking just two of the game’s nine shot attempts.

Doucoure empty! Everton – Sheffield United 1-0 (31st minute)

Calvert-Lewin again with a nice set-up for Doucoure and this time the Malian delivers with a header.

The English centre-forward drives to the left of the box and waits for a charging Foderingham to head the six for the finish.

1-0.

Everton close!

A long ball is expertly plucked out of the air by Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who slides it to Abdoulaye Doucoure on the wing.

But Wes Foderingham dives and gets a slice of Doucoure’s shot from close range.

It was more Everton at Goodison Park.
