Police launch murder investigation after 20-year-old man fatally shot

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was shot dead in Lambeth in the early hours of Saturday.

The 20-year-old victim was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds in a private car around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Doctors fought to save him, but he died around 3am.

Police say his family is being supported by specially trained officers.

Detectives believe he was shot on the Westbury Estate, in St Rule Street, near Clapham Common.

As of Saturday afternoon, the crime scene remained in the area as police appealed for witnesses to come forward.

They had not yet been arrested.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, Crime Specialist, said: “The victim was a young man with his whole life ahead of him – a life that was tragically cut short. My thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“A young man has lost his life and his family is desperate for answers.

“My officers and I are working to bring them the justice they deserve, and your information could be a critical part of our investigation.

“If you were in the area during this incident or have doorbell, dash cam or CCTV footage that may have captured the events, please contact the police as soon as possible. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can share what you know through the independent charity Crimestoppers.

“We do not underestimate the shock that such an incident will cause to the local community and I want to thank them for their patience as we continue to carry out our work at the scene.

“Residents will see both specialists and local officers in and around the location over the coming days. If you have any concerns or information that you think might help, please talk to them.”
