Erik ten Hag picks six matches that prove his point about Manchester United’s ‘team spirit’

Erik ten Hag insists his Manchester United players have proved they are fighting for the shirt in recent games, despite admitting collective disappointment at the way they returned to Crystal Palace last week.

United were beaten 4-0 at Selhurst Park and looked set to go down to their 13th Premier League defeat of the season without much of a fight. But the Ten Hag pointed to the run of games ahead of Palace to show there is great “team spirit” in the ranks, mentioning the phrase three times in the course of his reply and pointing to six in seven games between the 1-1 draw with Brentford on 30 March and Burnley on April 27.

This includes the most recent collapse to defeat from a winning position in Premier League history at Chelsea, while Ten Hag also mentioned the 3-3 draw with Coventry in the FA Cup semi-final when United surrendered a three-goal lead in the final 20. minutes before winning on penalties.

The Dutchman also pointed to the constant battle with injuries this season as proof that his side have maintained their fighting spirit in difficult circumstances.

“If I look at the problems we’ve had and all the injuries and almost every game they’ve fought. There was great team spirit – not on Monday (against Crystal Palace) and that’s why I was disappointed,” said Ten Hag. “On Monday I was very disappointed and the players were disappointed in themselves, there was a collective failure.

“All the other games, we fought each other, we showed good team spirit, now I can’t have any doubts about that.
