The amazing grandfather with a ‘second chance at life’ after cancer surgery

A grandfather who had cancer surgery just a year ago will make the most of his ‘second chance at life’ by touring the UK. Mark Harrington will saddle up to ride from Land’s End to John o’ Groats in 10 days from Tuesday 11th June.

In 2023, he arrived at Warwick Hospital’s A&E department in excruciating pain and was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Within 24 hours, he had surgery to remove a significant intestinal mass and had 27 polyps removed.

Mark will now cycle 100 miles a day to raise a target of £60,000 for a range of causes including the charity South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust. He said: “My life changed last year when I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Thanks to the skill of my surgeon and the colorectal team at Warwick Hospital, my life was saved.

“Although I still haven’t received the ‘all clear’, I feel like I’ve been given a second chance at life and I wanted to give something back to the exceptional doctors who helped me.” Mark started experiencing health problems last year.

He was initially told his symptoms were due to stress and IBS, but went to A&E when he was suffering from severe pain and sickness. After the operation, Mark, who has children and grandchildren, received three months of chemotherapy at the Stratford Rigby Unit.

Joining Mark on the epic fundraising bike ride will be Jordan Bingham, Dean Hands and Harry Harrington. Other charities to which the money raised will be donated are bowel cancer support group ABC Club and the Huntington’s Disease Association.
