Drivers could be fined £2,500 for switching drivers mid-journey

Drivers have been warned they could face a £2,500 fine for switching drivers mid-journey. Long journeys can be tiring and British authorities are advising drivers to take breaks.

Drivers are told to take 45-minute breaks after driving for four hours and 30 minutes, although such long journeys are usually only undertaken by HGV drivers, BirminghamLive reports.

It is not unusual for couples or family members to share the driving during long journeys, but they must be properly insured to do so. It was explained that if someone takes the wheel and does not have insurance on the vehicle, they face a £2,500 fine along with six to eight points on their licence.

A spokesman for Hippo Leasing warned people about the dangers of swapping drivers if people are not legally covered. “If the car journey is a long one, it’s not uncommon for two people to share the driving load, switching halfway between destinations to give each other a break,” they said.

“If both drivers are insured to drive the car, this is perfectly legal, however, if not, this could result in a £2,500 fine and six to eight points on your licence. So before you agree to share driving responsibilities, make sure they’re included in your insurance first.

“If you don’t want this person insured for your car long-term, you can get temporary insurance for an hour, week or month.”
