Liverpool have a ‘fantastic’ 16-year-old midfielder that Arne Slot will want to know all about

If Liverpool’s senior side were anything to go by against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, the Academy side face another challenge on Sunday night.

The Reds Under-21s will step out at the Londoners’ 62,850-capacity home in the new-look play-off quarter-finals to decide this season’s Premier League 2 winners (kick-off 7pm: 00).

Liverpool booked their place in the last 16 when they came from 2-0 down at half-time to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Kirkby last Sunday. Kaide Gordon, the 19-year-old who has been captaining the side, scored twice and reached another Reds milestone on Friday, penning a new long-term deal at the club.

Gordon also provided the assist for Trey Nyoni’s superb winner, with the 16-year-old midfielder quickly promoted to the U21s since arriving from Leicester City at the start of the season. His progress also saw him handed a senior debut by Jurgen Klopp at the end of the FA Cup fifth round win over Southampton, after being on the bench in the League Cup final win over Chelsea a few days earlier early.

“It was fantastic,” says U21 coach Barry Lewtas. “For such a young lad, on top of that, it’s a new club and he’s had to build new relationships with different coaches he doesn’t know and build relationships with the players. how he’s adapted He’s been a very good player for us this season since he came into the U18 squad, he’s had moments where he’s had to adapt.

“He’s only 16, so there were a couple of weeks where he was really up against strong, physical opponents, but his quality was there. I thought against Palace he was excellent and his goal summed up his performance and I told him. that after the game, for Trey, he can be really proud, but hopefully they will have more good performances between now and the end of the season.
