An elderly woman dies after burglars break into her London flat

An elderly woman died after two burglars forced their way into her apartment.

The 77-year-old collapsed while on the phone to 999 and was given CPR by police who responded to the burglary at around 6pm on Tuesday in High Barnet, north London.

She was taken to hospital in critical condition and died Wednesday morning. Her family has been informed.

Police are investigating whether the burglary is connected to three other burglaries in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh said: “We are currently focusing on the culprits behind this burglary which has contributed to the death of an elderly woman.

“Any burglary is a terrifying and harrowing experience that can leave many feeling uncomfortable in their own homes. This break-in ended with the worst possible consequences. A wonderful old lady has died.

“With this in mind I want to reach out and make a direct appeal to anyone in the criminal fraternity who has information to contact us.”

The suspects are both thin, white men in their 20s who were wearing woolen hats and dark clothing.

Chief Superintendent Simon Rose said: “These burglaries and the subsequent death of an elderly woman will no doubt cause concern and alarm to those in the area.

“Locals can expect to see an increased police presence in the area. We are there to help them and to support the local community, but we also need their help.”
