Danny Rohl wants Sheffield Wednesday to repeat their Premier League loan success

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has expressed his interest in loaning out more top Premier League talent this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday have produced a remarkable turnaround to retain their Championship status this season.

After looking doomed under former boss Xisco Munoz, the move to appoint German rookie Rohl marked a breath of fresh air at Hillsborough. His arrival marked the turning point in their season as they finished 20th in the Championship table and three points above the bottom three.

With Rohl at the helm, there is hope and ambition for the future, although his situation remains up in the air.

However, the Sheffield Wednesday boss has been clear about his goals and desires and has now made further comments in the January transfer window.

As reported by The Star, Rohl has expressed his desire for the Owls to return to the loan market for more Premier League prospects following the success of their January signings at Hillsborough. He said:

“When you got here and you got feedback from players, agents and other clubs, it wasn’t always easy.

“But now you’re seeing more and more people recognizing what we’re doing and how we can improve young players and give them a platform for the next step. It could be a key moment for us in the summer.

“Clubs in the Premier League could see that they have some good young players and that players can improve very well at our club. I think we should use that.”

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Wednesday’s loan stars

The January loan spells of Rohl and co have proved crucial for Sheffield Wednesday in their bid for survival. Because of this, it’s no wonder the manager is keen to dive into this market once again this summer.

James Beadle proved to be a big hit from Brighton & Hove Albion in January. He locked down the No.1 spot under Rohl as he continued his impressive rise through the leagues.

Beadle was the only Premier League loan, but there were other influential temporary signings at Hillsborough.

Ike Ugbo joined and became the talisman that Sheffield Wednesday were crying out for. Ian Poveda, signed by Yorkshire neighbors Leeds United, found success on his move to Hillsborough after struggling for minutes at Elland Road.

A big summer ahead

While Sheffield Wednesday can celebrate their survival, there is no hiding some crucial months.

Discussions will take place over Rohl’s future as he seeks assurances that his and the club’s ambitions match. He talked a lot about the long term at Hillsborough, but a boss of his ability needs support to match.

Attention will then turn to building a squad capable of climbing further up the Championship table following this season’s battle.

As Rohl says, Premier League and other top-flight loans could be key in the effort to do just that. Talents of a higher standard can be signed to fill gaps and add quality while benefiting from increased playing time.

An eye will be kept on transfer plans, of course, but sorting out Rohl’s future is the priority now.
