The cafe isolated after the attacks

Two people were taken to hospital after an attack at a cafe.

A window at the Down To Earth cafe in St James’s Street, Brighton, was left shattered amid the altercation.

Police said a man in his 20s was assaulted inside and another woman was assaulted nearby by a group of men on Sunday afternoon.

Officers – some with firearms – set up a cordon around the store’s front entrance after police were called at around 5.30pm. The business remained closed for the rest of the day.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “The two victims were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident and we are keen to speak to anyone with information.”
