Borussia Dortmund agree €25 million deal to sign Manchester City defender Yan Couto

Borussia Dortmund have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City to sign full-back Yan Couto this summer.

The 22-year-old, who has never made a first-team appearance for Manchester City, has been at the Etihad Stadium since 2020, when the Brazilian full-back moved to east Manchester from Coritiba FC on an initial five-year deal at the age of 17.

Couto signed a one-year contract extension with the Sky Blues this summer, but is set to complete an exit from Manchester City ahead of the new campaign, signing for Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

The full-back helped Manchester City’s sister-club Girona qualify for the UEFA Champions League during his third loan spell at the La Liga side last season, making 39 appearances and registering 12 direct goal involvements for the Spanish team.

The Brazilian international also spent the 2020/21 and 2022/23 campaign at the Estadi Montilivi, and had even been linked with a sensational €40 million move to Real Madrid last season.

Couto is unable to return to Girona for the 2024/25 season due to an agreement between the City Football Group and UEFA, with structural changes having been announced in order for both teams to compete in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old is still set to play Champions League football next season, after Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City reached a ‘verbal agreement’ for a summer transfer to Signal Iduna Park.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the Brazilian international will move to the Bundesliga club in a long-term deal worth €25 million, with a medical scheduled for this week.

Patrick Berger claims that Couto’s move to Borussia Dortmund will be a loan deal with an obligation to buy in 2025, and that the ‘parameters’ for the transfer to become permanent ‘should be easy to meet’.

The transfer is Manchester City’s third defensive sale this summer, following the departures of Sergio Gomez to Real Sociedad and Taylor Harwood-Bellis to Southampton.
