The Mayor of Coventry’s ceremony has been pushed back after the election was postponed

Coventry Council will elect a mayor almost two months later than usual, the council has confirmed. The so-called “mayor installation” ceremony was postponed to July after the city’s election was postponed, they added.

The contest for the Radford seat, which was organized by Deputy Mayor Mal Mutton, will now take place on June 20. It had to be postponed after candidate Dave Anderson died days before May’s local elections.

The move to delay the mayoralty means incumbent mayor Jaswant Singh Birdi will remain in office for another seven weeks. Mayors usually get their chain of office at the council’s annual meeting held in Coventry Cathedral.

This year’s meeting was split into two parts, according to the board’s calendar. The first part will take place on Thursday, May 16, in the council house.

It will confirm which councilors take on key roles at the authority. Lord Mayor of Coventry is designed to be an apolitical role.
