Watford should be among Max Lowe’s summer admirers: Opinion

Watford are heading into an important summer transfer window and it looks very likely that a new left-back will be on their shopping list.

Watford will come under the permanent management of Tom Cleverley this summer. He has performed well during his time as caretaker boss, but the rookie manager faces a new challenge this summer.

He will embark on his first transfer window at the reins and recruitment will be of paramount importance if they are to climb up the Championship table after a difficult 2023/24 campaign.

New signings are needed in the squad but a position of focus will be left back/full back.

Jamal Lewis’ loan is coming to an end, leaving only youngster James Norris as a natural option there. With that in mind, one player that should pique Watford’s interest is Max Lowe.

On the radar of the championship

Lowe sees his contract with relegated Sheffield United expire this summer and while it remains to be seen whether he ends up staying at Bramall Lane, there are reportedly Championship clubs interested in his situation.

The 27-year-old has played second-tier football with Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and Derby County over the years, also gaining top-flight experience with the Blades.

As such, it’s no surprise that Lowe is on the Championship’s radar. Watford, given their lack of left-footed defenders, should be among those tracking the South Normanton-born ace.

He will be a smart signing for any second-tier team in the market for a left back as a free agent, so the Hornets should look to add him to their ranks.

A good fit

Lowe is capable of playing in a number of positions which would suit Cleverley’s system. Left-back is his most natural role, but his attacking instincts are on display when played in a more advanced role and as a full-back.

He is also capable of operating as a left centre-back and in a back three, so would give Watford some tactical flexibility and valuable versatility.

Lowe is a good age at 27 and after an off-and-on season, he will be determined to start at his next club.

He has had injury issues that have limited his playing time, but as a free agent, Lowe will be a low-risk, affordable signing. If he can be kept fit, he could become a real asset for Watford or whoever joins this summer.

Should he move from Sheffield United, Lowe will not be short of options.
