Sheffield Wednesday must revive pursuit of Arsenal ace Mika Biereth: Opinion

Sheffield Wednesday were interested in Arsenal youngster Mika Biereth in the January window but a move failed to materialize for the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday eyed the Danish striker as a potential January signing amid his impressive form north of the border while on loan with Motherwell.

Biereth scored six goals and provided five assists in 15 games for the Scottish Premiership side and when Arsenal recalled him amid interest from the Owls, hopes of a deal were raised. However, he was to head to Austria instead, signing for Sturm Graz until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old continued his impressive scoring there as well. Biereth has nine goals and four assists in 21 games for the club, attracting attention in both the Austrian Bundesliga and the UEFA Conference League.

He will return to Arsenal when he comes though and should be on Sheffield Wednesday’s radar again.

A fantastic season for Biereth

Former Fulham prospect Biereth had been prolific in youth football before making the switch to the senior game.

The London-born ace has 15 goals and nine assists to his name in all competitions. He made the switch from Scottish to Austrian football with ease and you have to think that there is more senior football ahead of him next season.

A move to the Championship could be ideal for Biereth as he takes his game to the next level and at Sheffield Wednesday, with a top manager like Danny Rohl, he could really make a name for himself.

Another season in a top flight may await after this season’s success, but the Championship is as competitive as second-tier football gets and could be the ideal way for the Arsenal prospect to develop and learn the English game .

Hillsborough striker situation

it seems inevitable that at least one striker will be signed by Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

There is a desire to keep hold of influential loanee Ike Ugbo, but even if he ends up penning a permanent deal, further additions will be needed.

Lee Gregory is set to leave, while Callum Paterson is also out of contract. Michael Smith has a year left on his contract and Ashley Fletcher’s loan is coming to an end. Bailey Cadamarteri will remain on the cards.

A loan shot for former target Biereth could be ideal for the Owls as they look to strengthen at the top of the pitch.
