Crystal Palace 4-0 Manchester United: Eagles hammer Red Devils

Crystal Palace hammered injury-hit and passionless Manchester United 4-0 at Selhurst Park on Monday as Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils struggled to do much as top six hopes were handed another blow.

Palace conceded two goals from rumored United target Michael Olise in addition to goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell in a performance that left no doubt which side was the better side on the day.

Palace are in excellent form – unbeaten in five and winning four of those – as Oliver Glasner’s project has taken off in recent weeks, and the 14th-placed Eagles’ 43 points have them as close to fifth like the last three.

Manchester United have been hit hard by injuries all season and were forced to play Casemiro again at centre-back, but this performance had no hope of overcoming the absent quality.

Ten Hag’s side have 54 points, below seventh-placed Chelsea on goal difference and two points behind Newcastle United. The Red Devils also have an FA Cup final against Manchester City and that could end up being their best route to Europe, which is amazing for a team that finished third last season.

The Red Devils have no threat without Bruno Fernandes

I have often asked what Manchester United would be without Bruno Fernandes. If Monday is any indication, the answer is pretty bad.

Yes, the Red Devils were missing a lot of players, but Fernandes has been so central to any success the club has had this season, and his purple patch in recent weeks has kept the team afloat through poor performances.

Fernandes has missed two Premier League games this season and Man United were sent off in both. The 0-0 draw at Anfield in December at least brought the benefits of an away draw against fiercer and better rivals, but this 4-0 defeat was largely lifeless.

Fernandes’ 10 goals and seven assists in Premier League play this season account for almost a third of the Red Devils’ 52 goals. The 29-year-old has dragged the Red Devils into the top six, and on Monday it looked like they didn’t want to be there.

Sad situation at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Michael Olise was electric again, his two goals in six shots stealing the headlines, but so many Palace players were superb. Eberechi Eze won 12 of 18 duels and USMNT defender Chris Richards was almost perfect at left center back and had an assist. Few players looked good for United, but Mason Mount stood out as a healthy man, making a rare start in a losing season.

Scorers: Olise (13′, 66′), Mateta (40′), Mitchell (58′)

Michael Olise’s goal – Crystal Palace 4-0 Manchester United (66th minute)

Daniel Munoz cooks Casemiro and pushes the ball into the box for Olise.

It’s a grandstand finish. What happened to Man United?!

Tyrick Mitchell’s goal – Crystal Palace 3-0 Manchester United (58th minute)

Will Hughes almost beats Andre Onana, but the United keeper turns the danger into a corner.

Adam Wharton starts a corner routine that goes to him and his sweeping cross is headed away by Joachim Andersen.

Mitchell pushes home for 3-0. Another explosion coming?

Mitchell makes it 3-0 for Palace v Man United

Things go from bad to worse for Erik ten Hag’s side as Tyrick Mitchell strikes for Crystal Palace’s third against Manchester United at Selhurst Park.

Half time — Crystal Palace 2-0 Manchester United

Man United did not pose much danger to their former goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who is waiting to make his first save.

Andre Onana at the other end has another save with two goals conceded and the Red Devils are not doing much in front of him despite 62% possession.

This is a deserved 2-0 lead for Oliver Glasner’s Palace.

JP Mateta’s goal! Crystal Palace 2-0 Manchester United (40th minute)

Chris Richards sends a good ball to Jean-Philippe Mateta, who effortlessly beats Jonny Evans in a move that – to borrow a circle term – posterises the Northern Irishman’s back.

Mateta then fires a left-footed shot that beats Onana 90. 2-0 for Mateta’s 12th Premier League goal of the season.

Mateta fires Palace 2-0 to Man United

Jean-Philippe Mateta takes it himself and unleashes a vicious strike from an odd angle past Andre Onana to double Crystal Palace’s lead over the Red Devils at Selhurst Park.

Garnacho wins the dangerous free kick, Man Utd see the goal overturned

Alejandro Garnacho dribbles across the top of the 18 and hits the deck on a Will Hughes shot.

Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount preside over the free kick from maybe 22 yards. His effort deflects off the wall and over the goal.

An ensuing chance sees Rasmus Hojlund go up for a 50/50 with Dean Henderson and make contact before the ball drops and bounces over the line.

There is a short pause before a foul is acknowledged.

At the other end, Onana rejects Olise during the break. There should be another goal in this, and soon.

Lucky Man United

Mateta holds the ball centrally before passing it to Olise, who finds Munoz on the right.

Munoz pulls back Olise in the box and the first shot could have beaten Andre Onana if it hadn’t hit Mateta’s back.

A minute late, Olise takes a direct shot at Onana.

Erik ten Hag’s men don’t do much.

Michael Olise’s goal! Crystal Palace – 1-0 Manchester United (13th minute)

Casemiro, the centre-back, is well out of the box, to Casemiro the midfielder, and Michael Olise sends him to lunch.

Olise then drives into the United box and gets time and space to hit a low shot across goal that Andre Onana can’t get to in time.

1-0, the Eagles.

Will Olise make a move from Palace this summer?

David Ornstein joins Paul Burmeister to break down the latest news regarding Crystal Palace’s transfer plans this summer under new manager Oliver Glasner.

Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford remain unavailable. Mason Mount will start in midfield with Kobbie Mainoo and Christian Eriksen. How will this play out?

Palace don’t get Marc Guehi back and Jefferson Lerma also remains out, but the Eagles get another game where Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and JP Mateta can start and that’s exceptional news.
