Danny Rohl, Chansiri have ‘positive’ talks.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl and Dejphon Chansiri held out “positive talk” over his future at Hillsborough, according to The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday managed to retain their Championship status on the final day of the season, having looked doomed at the start of the campaign.

A dismal start under Xisco Munoz saw an early managerial change, with German rookie Rohl arriving to take his first senior management role in a difficult environment since Hillsborough.

The move to bring in the former Southampton and Germany manager proved a master stroke though. A remarkable turnaround saw the Owls finish three points clear of the drop and 20th in the Championship table.

With Rohl at the helm, there is once again hope for the future. However, questions have surrounded his fate coming into the summer, with Sheffield Wednesday a far from smooth-running club and the 35-year-old’s stock rising rapidly.

But now, amid earlier reports that talks will take place, The Star say early talks between Rohl and Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri have been “overall very positive”.

The manager will now go on holiday but discussions will continue afterwards.

One to hold on to

It’s no secret that Rohl is an absolutely crucial figure at Sheffield Wednesday.

At a time when the disconnect between the club and the supporters was at an all-time high, he stepped in to galvanize the squad and give the supporters something to cheer about again. He has done much more than that now, maintaining the club’s Championship status when previously it seemed almost impossible.

As such, Rohl’s admirers emerged. Second-tier rivals Sunderland are said to have had an eye on his situation should he become available.

With positive talk, however, Wednesday could retain the services of their influential manager as they prepare for a vital summer.

Avoiding the same mistake

After the peaks of promotion back to the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday quickly became a dismayed club.

Darren Moore inspired promotion from League One but ended up moving on from the club as he and Chansiri could not agree a new deal. That matter played out in the public eye, creating an ugly saga as the Owls floundered on the field.

Losing another popular manager after a fantastic end to the season would again be a disaster.

Fortunately, it looks like Sheffield Wednesday are on course to avoid that fate, although it will be a close eye to see how the talks go once Rohl is well-deserved rest.
