Barry Bannan says one thing will help Sheffield Wednesday continue their ‘upward spiral’

Barry Bannan has explained exactly what Sheffield Wednesday need to continue on an “upward spiral” next season.

Sheffield Wednesday finished the campaign in brilliant fashion, winning their last three games to confirm their place in the Championship.

The Owls have kept three clean sheets in their last six games, as well as picking up 14 points from a possible 18.

It comes as a huge surprise to many after Wednesday spent the first eight months of the campaign stuck in the relegation zone.

It wasn’t until they beat Blackburn Rovers just a few weeks ago that they moved out of the bottom three before finishing with three points.

The atmosphere around Hillsborough has completely transformed recently and everyone is now desperate to maintain it as they head into the new season in a few months time.

Sheffield Wednesday must keep Danny Rohl

However, Barry Bannan was not too keen to celebrate their success and has already highlighted what they need to do to stay on an “upward spiral”.

Speaking to The Star, the midfielder said: “We have to learn from our mistakes.

“I said that about our performances as well. We’ve had failures all our playing careers and we learn from it. As a club we have to learn from the mistakes we made in previous seasons and this season.

“We’ve got to start now, it’s not about doing it six weeks into pre-season trying to get people on board – we’ve got to get ready now and try to get a head start before we come back for next season.

“But we’ve got the right man in charge, there’s no better man we could ask for, so as long as you keep him and give him what he wants, I’m sure the club will be on an upward spiral.”

Dejphon Chansiri can finally do something to please his fans

Danny Rohl is clearly the key factor who has overseen Sheffield Wednesday’s huge transformation.

The players looked much better during his eight-month spell at Hillsborough, but without him, they could collapse again next season.

So while the team needs to “learn from their mistakes,” keeping Rohl is arguably the most important thing for the Owls.

Recent reports claim they have already held “positive” talks with the 35-year-old and there is an expectation he will stay this summer, but things can change very quickly in football.

Dejphon Chansiri needs to make it very clear that he is prepared to support Rohl and meet his demands if it means he stays put.

The president hasn’t been too keen on throwing the money around in recent years, but it’s clear Rohl could finally help Wednesday reach his potential with a little help.
