Sheffield Wednesday face Championship transfer battle for Leeds United striker

Championship clubs including Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Ian Poveda this summer. Leeds United winger Poveda spent the second half of the season on loan at Hillsborough.

The talented man has produced a string of eye-catching performances to win over the Owls fan base. His pace and trickery gave him an extra dimension in the final third on Wednesday.

A hamstring injury limited Poveda to just 10 appearances. He has sat out the last five games as Wednesday finished the campaign strongly to retain their Championship status.

It is very likely that Poveda played his last game for United. His current deal expires at the end of June and the player does not appear to be part of Daniel Farke’s long-term plans.

A report in The Star says Wednesday boss Danny Röhl is a big admirer of Poveda’s qualities and sees him as a major transfer target in what is expected to be a busy summer window. The report adds that Wednesday will face stiff competition from the Championship and abroad for his signature.

Despite strong interest from Birmingham City, the Owls snapped up the Colombia international late on deadline day. It is believed that the deal to bring him from Elland Road was initially understood to be a permanent move but was switched to a loan at the eleventh hour.

Speaking last week about the possibility of re-signing Poveda full-time, Röhl said: “We know these players and that they have given us quality in the second leg (halfway through the season). We know Ian when he played, he has a good impact, Ike Ugbo scored for us. We will try to have a good team together.”
