Man charged with murder of Tameside mum Michelle Hodgkinson

A man has been charged with the murder of a Tameside mother. Michelle Hodgkinson, who was 51, was found with suspected stab wounds on Edge Lane in Droylsden, Tameside, on Friday 2 June 2003.

Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of the emergency services. An inquest later that month, held at South Manchester Coroner’s Court in Stockport, heard Mrs Hodgkinson, who was born in Manchester, lived in St Andrew’s Avenue in Droylsden. She was a retail assistant and she was single.



A coroner said a post-mortem examination concluded she died as a result of “multiple blunt force injuries”.

In a statement today – Tuesday – Greater Manchester Police said Paul Hughes, 29, has been charged with one count of murder and is due to appear in court in June. GMP gave him no address.

A spokesman for the force said in the statement: “He has been taken into custody in a secure mental health hospital where he remains under treatment. He will next appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 6 June 2024.”

Detective Inspector Danny Lee, from GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “We understand that this tragedy may have heightened the community’s concerns about knife crime, but we would like to stress that this is a very rare type of incident. However, at the heart of this incident, a loved one has been torn apart and our thoughts remain with Michelle’s family, who we continue to support with specialist officers.”

Ms Hodgkinson’s heartbroken family have previously paid tribute, saying in a statement released by police: “Everyone who knows Michelle is in shock at the attack she endured and how horrific her last moments. Our Shelly B was the most amazing, loving, selfless and funny daughter, mother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, and most recently, nanny. It was a privilege to have known and loved her.

“She loved helping people in her community and was known for volunteering as an appropriate adult, her charity work and she loved creating obstacles to make people smile. She would be there for anyone and the day she was taken from us, she was doing just that. – going to meet her mother to take her shopping and go for coffee.

“Our family and friends are heartbroken. In an instant, our world collapsed and it will never be the same again. We will support each other and thank and appreciate the love and support shown by our family and friends. Please keep your loved ones close. , tell them you love them and make memories.

“Words cannot describe how much she will be missed. Our biggest cheerleader, our confidant, our rock – she will never be forgotten. We love you to the moon and back! We will do everything we can to get justice. We love you forever and ever.”
