Chansiri takes first huge step in rebuilding Sheffield Wednesday after meeting with Danny Rohl

Sheffield Wednesday have begun their rebuild under Danny Rohl after securing their Championship status for another season.

The coming summer for Sheffield Wednesday would have been a pivotal one, regardless of whether or not they stayed in the Championship this season.

But the fact that they beat the drop means this summer could be a very prosperous one, as well as a pivotal one in the club’s long-term trajectory.

It now looks increasingly likely that Rohl will stay in S6 given the Owls’ Championship status, although it has long been apparent that he wants changes and that owner Dejphon Chansiri would need to make those changes to keep Rohl invested in the club.

And those changes are already beginning.

Sheffield Wednesday are making improvements to their training ground

While Rohl will provide results and a rebuild on the field, Chansiri needs to make the changes in it.

Rohl hinted at the start of the season that he wanted changes to the club’s facilities, including the training ground, and this was reiterated after it was revealed that Rohl and Chansiri held positive discussions regarding the former’s future at the club after the 2- 0 vs. Sunderland on Saturday.

And now The Star say Chansiri is facilitating improvements to Middlewood’s training ground, with both pitches being redeveloped, as well as the Middlewood ‘dome’ being ‘revived’ after being shut down for the entire 2023/24 season.

The Hillsborough ground, which has been a cause for concern at times this season, is also set to be redeveloped and there is also talk of further improvements and extensions to the Middlewood buildings.

The only thing Sheffield Wednesday need to do this summer

Rohl will be pleased to see Chansiri take action so soon after the end of the season, as will fans who have long wanted to see positive changes off the field.

And while these changes are probably long overdue and much needed for the club, there is also the not-so-small matter of the first-team squad.

Chansiri needs to keep a close eye on finances this summer as Rohl will not want to limit himself to free agents and loan signings, although that appears to make up a large part of his summer transfer window.

The Owls still have a number of players out of contract in the summer and loan deals are also coming to an end.

So managing the funding between the training ground improvements, pitch resurfacing and then transfer market funding will be essential to get Sheffield Wednesday ready for next season.

But so far, after the update on the positive talks between Rohl and Chansiri and then this latest update on Middlewood’s improvements, it all looks to be a very positive summer in S6.
