“Today is a celebration of not only the new simulation center, but it’s also a celebration of philanthropy, of the incredible generosity of our donors,” said SLC President and CEO Glenn Vollebregt, who later, at Tuesday’s opening, announced the name of the center, an official official. ribbon cutting held right next to the wall where Kaneb’s name is prominently displayed.

The college said the new learning facility was made possible by generous donations totaling $200,000. Donations include $100,000 from an anonymous benefactor, $50,000 from NuMED Canada Inc. and another $50,000 from the Tom and Gail Kaneb Family Foundation; the donations are part of SLC’s upgrade of health care learning spaces in Kingston, Brockville and Cornwall announced last spring.

Tuesday’s guests included many dignitaries such as Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale, representatives from Cornwall-SDG Paramedic Services, past and present paramedic program students, faculty and members of the SLC administration team.

After the speeches and announcements, guests toured the labs and watched students in action – simulations that demonstrate the center’s capabilities.

Speakers said the center will make the transition for students becoming paramedics and hitting the road smoother than before, making them more comfortable and confident when they head out on their first journeys to start their careers.

“This will accelerate their learning and make them better and more confident paramedics,” said paramedic program coordinator Karrie Loynachan.

The renovated labs feature state-of-the-art equipment and technology, including video capture capabilities and simulated environments that replicate real-life emergency scenarios; simulations will allow students to practice critical emergency response procedures in simulated real-world environments.

Loynachan said there were 28 graduates in the program’s first year in 2005. It has grown substantially — 80 students will be accepted into the program in the next intake.

She said the college and Cornwall-SDG Paramedic Services built the program into what it is today.

“A world-class paramedic training program,” Loynachan said. “(And the new center) perhaps most importantly means an increase in (students’) readiness to respond to 9-1-1 calls.”

Gail Kaneb said she and her husband are proud to be involved with the college and “truly honored that (the center) will be named after our family’s foundation.”

The Kaneb family’s generosity extends to Brockville, where $100,000 from the foundation has been allocated to a specialty healthcare laboratory, transforming the campus into a center for advanced health sciences studies for all of Eastern Ontario.

Tom McCarty, CFO of NuMED, said: “(NuMED) has called Cornwall home for over 30 years and is delighted to lend its support to such a noble and worthy cause. This new center will enable students to be trained to provide the greater Cornwall area with the advanced paramedic services that are so needed.”
