Simon Jordan is eyeing a ‘cup final’ dig at Birmingham City after relegation to League One

Simon Jordan has laughed off the idea that Birmingham City will be a “cup final” for League One sides following their relegation to the third tier.

The talkSPORT pundit, the former Crystal Palace owner, has been open in his criticism of Blues owners Knighthead for their decision to sack John Eustace and appoint Wayne Rooney in October. And in a chat with Blues fan and talkSPORT reporter Ian Danter, Jordan disagreed with the idea that the Blues will be in the third tier cup final next season.

Danter said: “League One as a division is much, much tougher than it was in the mid-90s (when the Blues last played in it) and Birmingham will be everybody’s cup final to a degree next season.”

Jordan replied, “Come on, no, I’m not. I don’t think everyone in League One is saying, “My cup final is Birmingham.”

Apart from Derby County, who secured promotion back to the Championship at the second time of asking, the Blues’ average attendance in 2023/24 of 21,180 is higher than all League One clubs last season.

Jordan added: “The reason I was talking about the inevitability of this is because this is the only time in recent times at Birmingham City – a club I’m very invested in – where they’ve probably had more clarity and solidity in ownership. They didn’t have Carson Yeung and God knows who else in the world.”
