Jadon Sancho’s dream move earns Manchester United an unexpected FFP win

Manchester United will receive a welcome financial boost thanks to Jadon Sancho reaching the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund won 1-0 against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night in the second leg of their semi-final, with Mats Hummels scoring the only goal of the competition. The Bundesliga club already held a 1-0 lead from the first leg and advanced to the final with a 2-0 aggregate victory, where they will meet either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium.

Sancho starred for Dortmund in the first leg win against PSG and will now look to next month’s Champions League final. In the January transfer window, United loaned Sancho to Dortmund – the club they originally signed him from for £73m in 2021 – for the second half of the 2023/24 season.

In the first half of the campaign, Sancho made just three appearances for United. The midfielder was dropped from the first team last September following a public row with Erik ten Hag, with Sancho claiming he had been made a “scapegoat”. Since moving to Dortmund, the 24-year-old has been a key figure in Edin Terzic’s side and the club’s progress to the Champions League final will now give United a welcome financial windfall.

As part of the loan deal, United received €3.5m (£3m) upfront from Dortmund, with the option to add a further €4m (£3.4m ). MEN Sports recently reported that a United source said a “significant” bonus had since been activated in Sancho’s loan deal after Dortmund beat Atletico Madrid to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Thanks to PSG’s win, it is understood that Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final will earn United an extra payment from their loan deal, with United now owed more money as a result of the Bundesliga club reaching their first European Cup final from 2013 – which was also hosted at Wembley.
