Coventry’s homelessness project hailed a success

A NEW project to help end youth homelessness in Coventry has been hailed a success.

Recent findings reveal a shocking reality for young people in the West Midlands, 35% feel unsupported in their communities, with youth centers closing and a declining youth worker presence.

In response to these challenges, McDonald’s – in collaboration with the Positive Youth Foundation – launched the Makin’ It project, with the aim of nurturing the potential and providing vital support to young people in Coventry.

The scheme follows the successful pilot in Coventry, where McDonald’s Cross Cheaping has been a strong supporter of youth development for over a decade.

Recognizing the urgent need for safe spaces and opportunities, McDonald’s has committed to expanding its Makin’ It program nationally, with plans to fund 500 new youth work qualifications and establish safe havens in all 1,450 UK restaurants .

John Kiely MBE, franchisee of seven Coventry restaurants, said: “It’s no secret that today’s young people face incredibly difficult times, especially when it comes to accessing support and trusted adult opportunities.

“With around 60% of my workforce under the age of 25, I have seen first-hand the difference access to training, jobs and support can make.

“We want all young people in our Coventry community to feel they have opportunities to make the most of their lives and broaden their horizons, so with the scale of the Makin’ It project we have the ability to make a real difference .”

As the project expands nationally, McDonald’s aims to bridge the gap between youth support services and empower young people to reach their full potential.
