2024: News – Chief Scientific Advisor Visit | Bristol Digital Futures Institute

We were delighted to host Dame Angela McLean, the UK’s first female Chief Science Advisor to the Government, for a lively tour and demonstrations of BDFI’s research and facilities.

Enabling a holographic society, the accessibility of mixed reality experiences, power consumption for video streaming and trust in human-robot teams were just some of the demonstrations and projects presented at BDFI last month for a visit from Professor Dame Angela McLean, Chief Scientific Adviser of the government. .

The visit was also attended by the Chief Scientific Advisor of the Ministry of the Interior, Professor Jennifer Rubin.

The Vice Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol, Prof Evelyn Welch, welcomed Dame Angela and her team and joined them on a tour of the range of facilities we offer.

Our neutral lab space hosted nine different demonstrations of current BDFI activities and seed corn projects.

One of these demonstrations was the use of BDFI’s nomadic node (5G internet in a box) using the latest wireless network technology to generate high-quality 3D holographic images and videos in real time.

In addition to project demonstrations, the tour included a detailed look at BDFI’s Reality Emulator – our pioneering digital facility currently under construction.

The co-director of BDFI, Prof. Dimitra Simeonidou, led the tour. She said: “It was wonderful to host Dame Angela and her team.

“There is a lot going on at BDFI and it was inspiring to see so much demonstrated under one roof. Thanks to everyone who helped prepare for the visit and make it a success.”

Professor Dame Angela McLean, Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government, said: “I was delighted to visit the wide-ranging, highly engaging and innovative projects at BDFI during my visit to Bristol.

“It was a great opportunity to take a look at how digital technology can add value to society and improve it, which is very important in the rapidly evolving world we live in.
