Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry rise deemed ‘outrageous’

Proposals to increase prices for the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry have been submitted to the Government – and readers in our comments section are not happy about the potential future changes.

Joint operators Plymouth City Council and Cornwall Council want to increase charges by 15% to £3 for cars to help plug the financial shortfall.

Councils have previously sought funding from the Government to help maintain the crossings, but with no money pledged yet, the request for increases has gone ahead.

Discounts for pre-paid crossings using the TamarTag scheme will continue to be 50% of the total charge, resulting in a tag charge for cars and vans of £1.50. Taxes on other vehicles will generally increase at the same rates. Councils have asked for the increases to be applied on or before November 1 this year.

Lordks comment said: “An absolute disgrace, this bridge needs to be centrally funded, just like the Severn bridge. Taxing the local population is an affront.” User Condor replies: “Agreed, the bridge should be free and the ferry should be paid for by its customers.”

Zodiac24 writes: “This increase in toll rates, along with other recent increases, is outrageous. Get rid of the ferries, sell all council assets, build a second bridge paid for by selling council assets and bring in someone with good business sense and know who can run a franchise effectively. Better make all crossings free. Absolutely disgusting the way the whole business is currently being run.”

Whitsandboy says: “It will soon be cheaper to drive through Gunnislake!” Richardd1. writes: “Poor ferry management that often doesn’t act on one thing or another.”
