Cornwall, Ont. the high school was briefly placed on lockdown after a gunman threatens staff members


A 35-year-old man from Scarborough, Ont. The man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly threatened staff at a Cornwall high school with a gun early Monday morning, prompting a brief lockdown.


A note sent to families said the incident happened during school hours at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School on Tyotown Road.


“During school hours this morning, a male approached two staff members and was found to be in possession of a weapon. Fortunately, staff managed to get into the building and are now safe. Police were contacted and while awaiting their arrival, the school was placed on lockdown for approximately 45 minutes,” said a release from the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO).


Ontario Provincial Police said they were called to the school around 10:30 a.m. Police said only that the man had “a sawed-off weapon.” No one was reported injured.


Officers used a Taser on the man before arresting him.


The man faces several charges including assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and possession of an imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose. Police did not name the man in a news release.


The accused remains in custody, police said.


CDSBEO said counseling staff will be available to provide support should students and staff need it.
