Martin Kemp says he could have ’10 years to live’ after opening up about a brain tumour

Martin Kemp has candidly discussed his thoughts on mortality, admitting to his son Roman Kemp that he thinks he may only have about ten years left. The father and son duo, who recently launched their new podcast “FFS! My father is Martin Kemp,’ broached the subject of death in their debut episode.

When asked by Roman how long he thought he had, the former EastEnders actor mused: “10 years, I don’t know!” Reflecting on his health battles, the 62-year-old Spandau Ballet legend recalled being diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 34, an experience that forced him to confront the reality of his own mortalities.

Martin shared, “I was 34 when I went through that whole brain tumor scare and I went through two years of my life thinking I was going to die.” In 1997, ballet singer Spandau had pioneering treatment for the tumor after noticing a worrying lump on the back of his head.

He expressed his appreciation for the extra time he was given, stating, “Every day, every year, every month I’ve lived has been a bonus. When I was 34 and I went through that brain tumor stuff, I was basically resigned. to the fact that I was going to die”, reports Express.

The artist looked back fondly on the extraordinary moments of his life, especially the early 1980s with his band. He recalled: “I was quite happy, because I had the most incredible experiences. I lived the 80s in a rock band, the people I met, the things I did.

“When I was 17, I was flying around Europe on planes drinking champagne at 7 in the morning.” Martin reflected with a sense of gratitude on his past health problem, saying: “When I thought I was going to die, I thought, you know what, I’m pretty happy.

“And that was then, so every year I live, every month I live now is a bonus.” Father-son duo Martin and Roman, who entertained the nation on Celebrity Gogglebox, are set to explore new territory with their podcast project, marking their first venture together in the medium.

Martin, who also faced challenges on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, spoke candidly about his reason for teaming up with his son: ‘I want to do things with you because I like it when “I’m older, if I have grandchildren, I have evidence to show my relationship with you.”

This development comes after Roman’s candid discussion about his departure from Capital FM, where he was a staple for a decade. His exit in March was partly due to the profound impact of the suicide of his close friend and Capital FM producer Joe Lyons in 2020.

Roman was open about how Lyons’ passing at just 31 left a lasting impression on him, making it a challenge to continue working in the same environment full of memories. He explained his feelings to The Mirror: “Imagine there’s a tragedy in your house that you want to move,” and added: “I went through such a horrible time in that studio. .. I lived the same way. day over and over.”

The One Show host shared her desire for closure, saying: “I’m ready to say ‘OK, close that door now, don’t go back to reliving that horrible day.’ Every day I go in there and see Joe. ..I think it will be good for me to move on with my life.”
