Train derails at Wigan station causing chaos and cancellations on the main line

A train has derailed blocking all lines at Wigan station in Greater Manchester, with chaotic scenes expected for commuters this afternoon.

National Rail has confirmed the train derailment at Wigan North Western station, with the Northern and TransPennine Express routes currently affected, meaning journeys may be cancelled, revised or delayed until at least 6pm today. Engineers have gone to the site and are assessing the situation, the railway company added.




Routes affected include the northern route between Blackpool North/Wigan North Western and Liverpool Lime Street, as well as between Barrow-in-Furness/Windermere and Manchester Airport. The TransPennine Express line between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street is also affected.

According to traffic alert service Inrix, a freight train has derailed at Wigan North Western and all services remain suspended. National Rail said replacement road transport was being offered on some routes. He said: “A freight train has derailed in the Wigan North Western area blocking the lines between Wigan North Western and St Helens Central. As a result, trains may be canceled or revised. This is expected by 18:00”.

People may be entitled to compensation if they experience delays in completing their journey, National Rail added, while advising people to check the online “journey planner” for updates.

Here’s the advice for northern passengers on the National Rail website: “Not all stations between Wigan North Western and St Helens Central will be served. Northern ticket holders traveling from Wigan North Western to Liverpool Lime Street are advised to travel on Northern services from Wigan Wallgate to Headbolt Lane or Southport and board Merseyrail services to Liverpool Lime Street.

“Northern ticket holders traveling from Blackpool North to Liverpool Lime Street are advised to travel on Northern services to Preston and change for alternative services to Ormskirk where onward connections are available with Merseyrail services to Liverpool Lime Street.

“All ticketing restrictions have been lifted during this disruption to allow customers to complete their journey. Replacement road transport has been requested to operate between Wigan North Western – St Helens Central in both directions. Additional information will be posted once operators have been obtained and departed. or confirmed.”
