Manchester United staff have been angered by an email from the club’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The 71-year-old Ineos boss acquired a 25% stake in his boyhood club earlier this season and has already implemented sweeping changes behind the scenes since the deal, which gives him and his team control over sporting operations .

While Ratcliffe’s arrival was widely welcomed by most people connected to the club, it now appears that the British billionaire is in tatters after sending an email to staff telling them to clean up their act.

The email, in which Ratcliffe branded some areas of the club’s training ground and Old Trafford “a disgrace”, did not go down well in some quarters, with The Sun claiming the memo had turned the atmosphere at Carrington into a “toxic one”.

In the email, Ratcliffe wrote: “I had a good tour around some of the facilities. I am afraid I have been struck in many places with a high degree of disorder. Especially the IT department, which frankly was a disgrace, and the U18 and U21 changing rooms weren’t much better.

“These standards would not come close to what we would expect at INEOS and we are a chemical company. Manchester United is an elite sports organization. It’s a small thing in many ways, but if an organization doesn’t have standards and discipline, it won’t succeed.

“I would be grateful in the future if we adopt proper housekeeping standards everywhere. It reflects badly on the club if we have visitors, parents of young players, new players and the media and they see that we don’t care enough to keep things in shape.”
