A 50-year-old man hit by a car during an altercation in Newham has died from his injuries, police said.

It comes after officers responded to reports of a dispute between eight men on Butchers Road on April 28, during which the victim was struck by a vehicle.

The injured man was treated at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital where his condition was described as critical.

But despite the efforts and treatment of doctors throughout the week, he died of his injuries on Saturday.

Next of kin have been informed and continue to be supported by specially trained officers.

Five men were arrested in connection with the incident and taken to an east London police station – they are currently on bail pending further enquiries.

Police admitted the incident was “in close proximity” to the killing of a teenager in Coolfin Road on April 26, but said the two were not related and the Butchers Road altercation was isolated.

But in response to the events, which they believe have raised concerns in the borough, Newham residents will still see enhanced high-visibility patrols from Safer Neighborhoods officers and the Violence Suppression Unit.

Officers from Safer Schools will also patrol and engage with schools and colleges in the area, with additional support from the Violent Crime Task Force and other central units.

Detective Inspector Daniel Thompson, from North East Command, which covers Newham, said: “Detectives and specially trained officers have been working at the crime scene throughout this week in what was a large and complex crime area. I want to thank the public for their patience while we carry out our investigations.

“In response to the events of the last week, Newham residents will see enhanced high visibility patrols from Safer Neighborhoods officers and the Violence Suppression Unit.
