Sheffield Wednesday ‘very interested’ in signing the 7-goal striker this summer

Sheffield Wednesday have set their sights on yet another potential summer signing.

Sheffield Wednesday are wasting no time in preparing for the 2024/25 season after a dramatic end to the 2023/24 campaign.

The Owls have secured the Championship and are now eyeing a new deal for manager Danny Rohl as well as making improvements to their Middlewood training ground.

And Sheffield Wednesday are also starting their summer transfer plans, with reports claiming the Owls want to re-sign Brighton loanee James Beadle and Ian Poveda before his Leeds United contract expires.

Rohl is now reportedly keen to re-sign on-loan striker Ike Ugbo with his parent club Troyes on the brink of relegation from French Ligue 2.

Sheffield Wednesday are eyeing the transfer of Ike Ugbo

Journalist Joe Crann revealed on X that Sheffield Wednesday are keen to sign Ugbo on a permanent transfer this summer.

The Canada international joined on loan from Troyes in January and scored seven goals in 18 league outings for the Owls, ending the season with 11 league goals after scoring four on loan at Cardiff in the first half of the campaign.

He became an instant fan favorite at Hillsborough, his goals playing a big part in the club’s eventual 20th place finish.

The key factor behind Sheffield Wednesday’s potential swoop for Ike Ugbo

The issues with Ugbo’s parent club Troyes are not so great at the moment. Their last match was abandoned due to fan trouble following a disastrous season in Ligue 2, with Troyes relegated from Ligue 1 just last season.

Troyes now have two games to play and a six-point gap from safety to claw back, and what happens with that game remains to be seen, but Troyes have suspended four players since then.

So for Ugbo, a return to Troyes and playing third-tier football in France next season may not be on his agenda, and quite well after his impressive spell in England.

And Troyes may feel now is the perfect time to take advantage of Ugbo with his stock high and the club no doubt in need of some capital amid their struggles.

But Sheffield Wednesday will have to wait for Troyes’ season to finish before they can make a realistic move for Ugbo, and even then it remains to be seen whether or not the Owls have the money to make a move.

There is a fear that other clubs will come and put money on the table for Ugbo before Sheffield Wednesday even have a chance to make their offer.

But Ugbo enjoyed one of the best spells of his career with Sheffield Wednesday, so the Owls could have the first say on what happens next for the 25-year-old.
