Ike Ugbo sends emotional message to Sheffield Wednesday fans after loan spell ends

Ike Ugbo has penned an emotional message to Sheffield Wednesday after his loan spell came to an end.

Ike Ugbo had five rather unsuccessful spells in England before arriving at Sheffield Wednesday.

The forward began his career with Chelsea, where he failed to make an appearance, before being sent out on loan to Barnsley, MK Dons and Scunthorpe United – where he scored five goals in 51 games.

Ugbo also had a short loan spell with Cardiff City in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign and scored four times before making an untimely return to Troyes.

The Canadian international then linked up with Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the year and hasn’t looked back, claiming eight goal contributions in 18 games and making a huge contribution to their Championship survival.

Ike Ugbo will ‘never forget’ his loan spell

Ugbo has now taken to Instagram to address the club and fans as he prepares to return to France.

He wrote: “To all SWFC fans, staff and colleagues. Thank you for all the experience you have given me this season.

“When I first joined the club in January I knew the uphill battle we had to face, but from day one I felt the whole club coming together was going to pull us through.

“From the belief of the manager, to the constant support from the fans, we managed to get the job done.

“Even though it’s only been a few months, the journey we’ve been on together has been one I’ll never forget.

“Thank you, Owls.”

Could Sheffield Wednesday sign him permanently?

Although there has been talk of Sheffield Wednesday looking to sign Ike Ugbo permanently, the striker’s message seems to be one of accepting his chapter here is closed.

Although that’s not necessarily the case if the Owls were to launch a bid for him, and he’s unlikely to post on social media how much he wants to stay at Hillsborough.

Ugbo has two years left on his contract at Troyes and the French club could be looking to build on his impressive campaign in the Championship.

His value could drop when he enters the final 12 months of his contract next summer, so it seems more likely that they will offload him for a decent fee in the next few months.

According to transfermarkt, Ugbo’s market value is currently £2.4m, although this looks likely to rise if he receives a lot of interest.

It would be a big statement if he was willing to cough it up on Wednesday, but that decision will come down to whether Dejphon Chansiri can support Danny Rohl as he is expected to.
