Sheffield Wednesday now set to sign Leeds United star, but it’s not Ian Poveda

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly closing in on their first signing of the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday have wasted no time in getting their plans for the summer and the 2024/25 season underway, following their great escape under manager Danny Rohl.

There are reports that owner Dejphon Chansiri is finally making improvements to the training ground as well as discussing a new contract for Rohl, whose current deal expires in 2025.

There are also reports of Sheffield Wednesday being linked with players; the Owls in the past week have been tipped to return for January loan trio Ian Poveda, James Beadle, and Ike Ugbo.

Poveda is out of contract at Leeds United this summer, but he may yet be reunited with one of his Leeds teammates at Hillsborough ahead of next season.

Sheffield Wednesday chasing deal for Leeds United star

An emerging report from LeedsLive has claimed that Sheffield Wednesday are ‘set to sign’ Leeds United’s Keenan Carole on a free transfer this summer.

The 19-year-old French winger was apparently on trial with the Owls last week, featuring for the U21s against Ipswich Town.

Carole hasn’t featured for Leeds’ U21s this season. He’s the son of former Leeds man Sebastian Carole, with Keenan described as a winger who’s comfortable playing on both flanks.

No timeline has been put on Carole’s reported move to Hillsborough, although it looks like a deal that’s quite far down the line.

Keenan Carole deal a sign of things to come at Sheffield Wednesday

A month or so before the 2023/24 season ended, Sheffield Wednesday got hard at work securing new contracts and pro deals for a lot of their younger players.

The likes of Sam Reed and Joey Phuthi were among those and now Carole’s seemingly imminent arrival suggests that Sheffield Wednesday are paying a lot more attention to their youth team.

It’s something that Rohl insisted on when he arrived and the emergence of names like Bailey Cadamarteri and then Pierce Charles in goal proves that Rohl is ready to take chances on these younger players.

Carole looks like a very inexperienced player, although his decision to join Wednesday even before his Leeds deal expires shows that he’s eager to kick on, and that he thinks Sheffield Wednesday is a good place for his development.

And his signing might suggest that Sheffield Wednesday are looking more towards free agents and younger players this summer, which might not all be bad.

Although Sheffield Wednesday still need to bring in first-team quality this summer; they can’t solely rely on unproven gems like Carole, although signings like this are certainly showing a shifting mentality towards the future of the club.
