Cannock fire devastation in pictures after ‘big bang’ heard before huge blaze

New images show the devastation caused by a massive fire which has covered part of the Midlands in clouds of thick smoke. The latest pictures from the scene in Cannock show flames tearing through a crushed warehouse.

Residents reported hearing a ‘big bang’ before clouds of thick black smoke filled the skies this morning (May 9), leaving the warehouse engulfed in flames, reports BirminghamLive. More than six hours on and the huge 999 operation in the area continues.



Residents have been told to stay inside as businesses have been evacuated. Plumes of smoke have been spotted as far away as Brownhills, Stafford, Great Wyrley, Hednesford and Rugeley.

At just before 6am, a “large scale incident” was declared by Straffordshire Fire and Rescue Service after 999 calls were made to Kingswood Lakeside near the A460 Orbital Island. On behalf of the fire service, Staffordshire Police shared an update that said: “We are at the scene of a large warehouse fire in Cannock. Crews got a call just before 6.15am this morning (Thursday 9 May) to an address on Cley Road .”

The statement continued: “We’ve currently got lots of firefighters down there alongside other colleagues from West Midlands Fire Service and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service to help bring the fire under control.” West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was initially called to the scene before then being stood down.
