A rarely seen blue lobster has been caught off the south Cornish coast. Chris Puckey, a fisherman, discovered the unique crustacean in one of his traps near Polperro on Sunday.

According to a BBC report, these lobsters have an electric blue hue, attributed to a genetic abnormality that leads to the overproduction of a certain protein. An expert from the zoology department at University of Oxford noted that the odds of catching a blue lobster are as low as one in two million.

Puckey and Polperro fish fisherman Jacqueline Spencer opted to donate the lobster to a nearby aquarium for its protection, the report said.

Spencer shared with the BBC: “We were worried that they might get caught again in another pot or even get eaten by another lobster.” She said they want the lobster to “live its life in peace and be protected from predators” in the aquarium.
