Prince William begins overnight trip to Cornwall – live updates

The Prince of Wales embarked on his first overnight trip since his wife Kate’s cancer diagnosis.

Prince William’s first port of call in Cornwall is Nansleden in Newquay, where the Duchy of Cornwall’s first homeless housing project will be built.

The project, delivered in conjunction with Cornish charity St Petrocs, will provide 24 fully supported homes for homeless people.

William will meet development leaders and St Petrocs chief executive Henry Meacock.

Construction will start in September of this year, and the land for housing is provided by Ducat.

William will then visit Fistral Beach where he will meet representatives of local organizations working to promote safety in the sea and across the beach area ahead of the coming summer months.

On Friday, he will make his first official visit to the Isles of Scilly since becoming Duke of Cornwall in September 2022. William’s engagements will include a stop at St Mary’s Harbor and St. Mary’s Community Hospital.

William saw the plans for the housing project on arrival.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said: “Since the project was announced in February, work on the Nansledan Innovative Housing Project has progressed at a brisk pace. Designs are nearing completion and construction is scheduled to begin on the site in September, with completion expected by fall 2025.

“Today is the first time the Prince will see the site of the new houses. Looking forward to hearing from the Ducat team on how the work is progressing and from St. Petrocs on the impact the project will have on the people facing it. homeless at the local level.

“Both Her Royal Highness and the Duchy hope that this project will serve as an inspiration to others.”

Last year, William launched Homewards – a five-year program run by the Prince and Princess of Wales’ Royal Foundation, which aims to end homelessness.

While viewing the plans, William spoke to Max, a local who has experienced homelessness himself.
“There’s always hope,” Max said.

“This is what we really want to do,” said the Prince, “Give people like you hope. But it has to be real and it has to be effective. Is there anything you can pick, any key ingredients, that would make it work?”

He added that there are so many clichés surrounding what homelessness means and that for many – young people and families in particular – it involves moving their lives from one B&B or shelter to another, rather than sleeping rough.

By the end of their conversation, William was delighted to hear that Max was in a “good place” and was planning to join the Royal Navy.

The new homes in Nansledan were designed by local practice ALA Architects, with input from the Duchy, St Petrocs and expert group Homewards. The homes are designed to be consistent with the quality and character of Nansledan, to give residents dignity and help them settle into their new community from day one.
