Man fighting for life after Aston A34 bridge collapse as police launch investigation

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a Volkswagen Golf crashed into a bridge in a city underpass. The horror crash happened on Aston’s A34 Birchfield Road at around 9.30pm on Tuesday (May 7).

Three men involved in the crash were rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Paramedics yesterday described his injuries as “serious” or “potentially serious”.




However, West Midlands Police confirmed this afternoon that one of the men was treated for life-threatening injuries. The other two men’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, the force said.

A fourth patient was checked at the scene before being discharged. A Volkswagen Golf was pictured crashed against a bridge in the morning after the crash, which closed the A34 for around 14 hours.

The car was later loaded onto the back of a recovery lane along with a second vehicle. Police investigating the crash have appealed for witnesses to contact the force.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said this afternoon: “We were called to a collision on Birchfield Road, Birmingham at around 9.30pm on May 7. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a car had crashed into a bridge.

“Three men were taken to hospital to be assessed. Two of those men were found to have injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.
