M1 live traffic updates as vehicles are detained after crash with long delays

All traffic is stopped on the M1 following a road accident on the motorway this afternoon.

The motorway is currently closed southbound between junction 40 of the A638 Wakefield Road and junction 39 of the A636 Denby Dale Road. Traffic has been stopped since 4:32 p.m.




Currently, queued traffic is building up as a result of the accident and closure.

Inrix said: “All traffic temporarily stopped and traffic stationary due to the accident on the M1 Southbound from J40 A638 Wakefield Road (Ossett/Wakefield) to J39 A636 Denby Dale Road (Wakefield/Durkar).”

It is not yet known what exactly happened and how many vehicles were involved in the accident. It is also not known if anyone was injured in the crash. West Yorkshire Police have been contacted for comment.

The road remains open, but the lane is closed

Long delays and one lane closed due to the accident on the M1 southbound from J40 A638 Wakefield Road (Ossett / Wakefield) to J39 A636 Denby Dale Road (Wakefield / Durkar). Congestion to J42 (M62 Lofthouse interchange). The journey takes about 35 minutes.

Traffic was stopped for about ten minutes, after which lane four (of four) remains closed. A vehicle broke down at the tailgate.
