‘Furious’ mother ‘cries her eyes out’ after discovering ‘teacher had sex with son’

A mother has told a court she is “absolutely furious” after learning her underage son was allegedly groomed by his teacher, who then had sex with him.

Rebecca Joynes, 30, is currently on trial charged with six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child. The allegations, which she denies, involve two teenagers she met through her teaching role at a school in Greater Manchester.

Jurors at Manchester Crown Court previously heard allegations that Joynes groomed a student with a shopping trip to the Trafford Center before having sex with him and subsequently getting another teenage student pregnant.

On Thursday morning, May 9, a statement from the mother of one of the boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was read to the jury, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The statement read: “One night after he came home from school he said to me ‘my teacher is fine mum’ I laughed and thought that was a typical thing for a teenager to say at the time too I didn’t think of anything. This one.”

Jurors were previously told the boy spent the night at Joynes’ flat after their visit to the Trafford Centre. Prosecutors say Joynes had sex with the boy in her apartment.

The boy, known as Boy A, admitted during questioning that he lied to his mother, claiming he was staying at a friend’s house. A few days later, while out shopping at the Trafford Center with his mother, she noticed a “red/purple mark” on his neck that looked like a “love bite”.

She recalled: “I said, ‘What’s that mark on your neck?’ And he said, “Oh, nothing, I don’t know.”

She later received a call from the school’s assistant principal about the allegations regarding her son and Joynes. She went to the school and spoke to her son, who dismissed it as “just some stupid chatter on group chats that got out of hand”.

She continued: “I said I can’t believe you said that, you could have cost this girl her career now. She then received a call from the mother of her son’s friend, who confessed that she had previously lied about Boy A staying at her house.

“I asked, ‘Where did it go then?’ and she said, “In Salford, I only know that when I went there to get it.” I said, “It wasn’t the teacher’s house, was it?” and she said, “Yes, it was.”

“I was upset, I was crying and I just ended the call. I was absolutely furious and crying. (Boy A) then came into the room and said, “Mom, I’m so sorry I lied to you.”

“And I said, ‘I already know what happened, I’m going to hell with school.’ He begged me (not to go) saying, “Mother, please don’t.”

She stated that she then visited the school to speak with police, where she was informed of the allegation that her son had stayed at Joynes’ residence that night.

Joynes, of Pensby Road, Wirral, pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual activity with boy A, two counts of sexual activity with boy B and two counts of sexual activity with boy B while a person in a position of trust.
