The Five Nations Roller Derby Championship returns to Sheffield

Hallam Hellcats will play their final game of the 2024 Championship season against Dundee Rebellion Roller Derby.

The match on Saturday 11th May will take place at the Skate Central training ground on Queens Road.

Team captain Chelsea Abbott said: “The crowds at our home games have previously been great, we aim to bring a skilled and entertaining game to Sheffield and an awareness of women’s contact sports right here in the city.”

“It allows more people to discover us and shows exactly what women in sports can do.”

The Five Nations Roller Derby Championships, founded in 2015, is one of the largest interleague tournaments in Europe.

Over 50 leagues from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland enter annually and are divided into two tiers, with matches played throughout the year.

The Hellcats won their first game against Wiltshire Roller Derby, who Dundee will also play on Saturday.

Miss Abbott, nicknamed ‘The Slaughterhouse’, said: “Dundee are old acquaintances of the track who played them in 2016, it was definitely time for a rematch!”

“Dundee are a strong side who, despite playing two games, are not expected to be easy opponents and we will need to keep our heads firmly in the game at all times as we hope to get a second win under our belts.”

The Hellcat’s second game was against the Newcastle Canny Belters, who they lost 238-54, their heaviest defeat in five years.

Miss Abbot, 36, said: “They well and truly belted us, they played incredibly strong and tactically to not allow us to score at all. He really deserves his number one spot this season.”

The Hallam Hellcats, founded in 2012, are a “close-knit” team of women and non-binary people who have a “real sense of community” rooted in their team values.

Asked about the roller derby community in Sheffield, Miss Abbott said:

“Sheffield still has many sports venues for grass sports such as roller derby, the city values the many options available and in the UK this has led to the withdrawal of roller derby teams due to rising costs.”
