“It’s huge for us,” CDMB President Kyle Bergeron said Tuesday. “We submitted a tender in September. . . (a win in Cornwall) was unexpected, it was a nail-biter (provincial assembly vote), we won by one vote.”

Bergeron said the bid is for the 2028 event, but with the possibility of a change and Cornwall hosting instead in 2029. So, he said, with the year set, the official announcement comes months after the successful bid.

Bergeron said with Legion Park built 30 years ago in the 1990s, renovations are necessary “to host an event of this magnitude. . . renovations are overdue, so this is the perfect reason to do it.”

He said the organization will work with the city on the project, and most of the renovations will be for Diamond 4, the one next to the clubhouse on the south end of the property. Plans will likely include the installation of new electronic scoreboards, an overhaul of the playing field and the addition of new bleachers and fencing.

The association expects the event to have seven teams, the host River Rats, along with regional champions for the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, as well as champions from the Prairies and Atlantic.

The next 2024 edition of the tournament will be held this summer not far from Cornwall in Kingston at the newly restored cricket ground from 28 July to 8 August. Little League Canada and the Kingston Baseball Association said it will be a major event for Kingston, welcoming guests from across Canada. Little League has been played in Canada since 1951; Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) and Vancouver (British Columbia) were the first leagues outside the United States, and these days there are about 500 local leagues in the country.

While Cornwall’s time in the national spotlight is still five years away, the CDMB is encouraging everyone from volunteers to baseball enthusiasts to sponsors to get involved and make a difference to the city by being an outstanding host for a sporting competition premier amateur by contacting cornwallminorbaseball. @gmail.com.

Note that the organization is scheduled to host the 2024 Ontario Junior Provincial Championships July 11-19.
