Middlesbrough have opted against a move for Luke Thomas from Leicester City

Middlesbrough have decided against pursuing a deal for Leicester City loanee Luke Thomas this summer, as detailed in a report by TeesideLive.

Middlesbrough landed the left-back on a temporary basis until the end of the season in the January transfer window. The defender spent the first half of last term with Sheffield United in the Premier League, but his time in South Yorkshire was ultimately cut short.

Thomas, 22, made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Blades before returning to his parent club last winter. He then linked up with Boro and made a total of 12 appearances for Michael Carrick’s Championship side.

In this latest update on his future from TeesideLive, Middlesbrough are not interested in landing him permanently in the next window ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. They will look at other targets in his position instead to freshen things up.

Middlesbrough’s attitude outlined

Leicester City have a big decision to make on what to do with Thomas ahead of next season.

The Foxes are preparing for life back in the top flight after winning the title under Enzo Maresca.

Whether the full-back is part of their long-term plans remains to be seen. The fact that he has been loaned out twice suggests that he is out of favor right now.

Thomas’ contract at Leicester City expires at the end of next month and he is yet to put pen to paper on an extension, meaning he is set to become a free agent as soon as things stand.

The former England youth international has been on the books of the local side for his entire career to date and has risen through the ranks at their academy.

He was a regular at various youth levels before breaking into their first team in 2020.

Thomas has since made 85 appearances for the Foxes, scoring two goals, but has not played for them since their relegation last year.

What’s next for Middlesbrough and Leicester City?

It doesn’t look likely that Middlesbrough will sign Thomas again and they will be hoping to make the play-offs next year. They missed out this past campaign.

As for Leicester City, Maresca has done his job and will now be eager to strengthen his ranks to ensure his side are ready for what lies ahead in the top flight.

Thomas’ situation is uncertain and he could become available to other Football League clubs very soon.
