Manchester United manager Steve McClaren admits standards have not been high enough at the club at times over the past two seasons, but believes things will improve under new INEOS co-ownership.

McClaren previously worked as manager at Old Trafford from 1999-2001 under Alex Ferguson and returned with Erik ten Hag in 2022.

Last season went pretty well as the Red Devils won the League Cup and returned to the Champions League, but this campaign has been pretty disastrous.

Ten Hag’s side sit eighth in the Premier League after losing 4-0 at Crystal Palace last time out, and their chances of a top-four finish are already over.

McClaren believes it is just a crisis that the club will bounce back from and claims there have been good points since his return, but admits that at times the standards have not been what they should be for Manchester United.

“Arsenal came back after going down and Man United will do the same,” McClaren told the BBC.

“We had a lot of storms. I see tremendous upside from INEOS and what they are trying to do. It is identifying standards and returning to them.

“At times since I’ve been back the last two years, I’ve had those standards. We also had standards that were not Manchester United.’

McClaren feels the INEOS team will bring success with them, impressed by what he has heard from the new hierarchy at Old Trafford.

“Talking to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, talking to Sir Dave Brailsford, they get the best people. They want this to be successful,” he said.

“They did that in their other sports and businesses. I’m sure they’ll do it again with Manchester United.’
