Robbie Savage admits John Eustace ‘delighted’ and predicts Birmingham City League One

Former Birmingham City and Blackburn midfielder Robbie Savage has expressed his delight that former Blues boss John Eustace was able to keep Rovers in the Championship.

Eustace started the season in charge at St Andrew’s and guided them to fifth in the league before being replaced by Wayne Rooney. Eustace wrapped it up at Ewood Park and oversaw a final-day win at Leicester City that made the Blues’ victory over Norwich meaningless in their fight to avoid relegation.

Savage, who controversially left the Blues to sign for Rovers in 2005, also backed the Blues to come back at the first attempt.

“I was delighted for John Eustace and Blackburn as they stayed up on the last day,” Savage told Planet Sport Bet. “This is probably one of the few teams I could walk onto the field without getting booed these days. You have to look at Birmingham’s decision to part ways with Eustace at the start of the season when they were flying high in the Championship.

“When you make the decision to part with a manager who is doing well, you have to do it right. In the end, Birmingham got the call wrong and have now suffered the consequences of relegation. I feel for the fans, but they will be back. It’s a wonderful football club where I had some of my best years in the Premier League.

“League 1 is tough but I can see them coming back and regrouping. I’d imagine they’ll be back in the Championship at the first time of asking.”
